CASCADE OF UPSKILLING: SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION
Traditional rice cultivation requires a lot of effort that results in drudgery and bending for long hours. The System of Rice Intensification is an innovative, nature-based system where rice production is increased through reduced effort in the field through technology and nature-based integrated pest management methods.Women farmers are being encouraged to convert to the organic system of rice intensification farming method to reduce pollution, incorporate organic farming and reduce drudgery of rice cultivation practices. Women are earning SoCCs for establishing bird perches in their rice fields and home-made sticky traps for natural pest control, install structures to reduce firewood use in their kitchen, construct vanarai bunds to reduce water run-off and plant native trees in their farmlands. They will redeem their SoCCs for seed and farm input, demo-plot training and Cono-weeders that reduce the effort of physically deweeding their farms. This method results in increasing rice production in a sustainable manner, and with minimal damage to the environment.
