ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS DIET THROUGH ORGANIC KITCHEN GARDEN
Deendayal Seva Pratishthan has been working in the most rural and remote areas of Yavatmal District in Maharashtra since 1997. “Hidden hunger” is prevalent among women and children in these areas. This occurs when individuals lack vital micronutrients that are most commonly found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Poverty in this region has been exacerbated by a high rate of farmer suicides, which often leaves women to care for the farm and family. As a result of this issue, nearly 80% of women in these regions suffer from anemia, and many children suffer from stunted growth. Achieving better health for rural women and families demands a holistic approach encompassing education, healthcare accessibility, community engagement, addressing socio-cultural barriers, and improved income. Deendayal is committed to working towards these goals with all stakeholders, including community leaders, government organizations and agricultural universities to achieve these goals.
Encompassing 150 villages across five blocks, i.e. Kalamb, Babhulgaon, Ghatanji, Arni, and Yavatmal in Yavatmal District, this project aims to serve 3000 women beneficiaries and their families. Women will learn sustainable techniques for making organic vegetable gardens, yield improvements, and value addition to their produce. These gardens will ensure access to fresh produce, improving the health of families. The women will also get income from selling their excess produce in local markets, economically empowering them and their families to invest in their children’s education and other essential goods. Women will also learn marketing and packaging skills, produce storage and processing, financial literacy, and life-skills, nurturing a culture of self-sufficiency and resilience.
The primary goal of the Organic Vegetable Garden Project is to establish a sustainable and eco-friendly gardening culture in Yavatmal, fostering an environment that encourages natural growing methods while minimizing the use of artificial chemicals and pesticides.
