ACCELERATING WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT THROUGH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES
Asia Initiatives has partnered with the Association of Rural Development in Nepal to empower marginalized women through sustainable agricultural practices, leadership & collaboration, and overall livelihoods growth by utilizing the Social Capital Credits (SoCCs) system. The project works with a varied group of 200 women, aged 18-40, stemming from indigenous roots with a majority from the Tamang community. These women rely heavily on subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods, facing challenges such as inadequate irrigation, limited agricultural knowledge and reliance on mono-cropping.
With a holistic strategy, our work equips women with the knowledge, tools and opportunities required to improve their livelihoods while fostering environmental stewardship and equitable community development. Through a SoCCratic voting for the SoCCs menu, acts such as Composting, Environment cleaning and Cascades of upskilling have been identified and added to the SoCCs earning menu. Individual SoCCs can be redeemed for Agriculture Intensification Resources Support and quality vegetable seeds. This shift towards sustainable farming holds the potential to amplify women's earning capabilities, enabling them to tap into local markets and generate inclusive income streams. Ultimately, this not only uplifts individual livelihoods but also stimulates community-wide economic growth, marking a substantial step towards poverty alleviation in South Asia.
